Upcoming Art in the Parks Talk by Sculptor Guiseppi Penone
Gagosian, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and the Parks Conservancy present a yearlong outdoor installation by Giuseppe Penone in San Francisco’s historic Fort Mason. Two sculptures by Penone – La logica del vegetale (The Logic of the Vegetal) (2012) and Idee di pietra (Idea of Stone) (2004) – will be on display on October 24.
In celebration of this latest Art in the Parks installation, the artist will give a talk at the Chapel at upper Fort Mason on Thursday, October 24, at 5pm. Penone will discuss his large-scale outdoor sculptures with Elizabeth Mangini, art historian and author of a forthcoming monograph on the artist. This event is free and open to the public with an RSVP. To attend the free event, presented by Gagosian Quarterly Talks, RSVP to rsvpsf@gagosian.com

As the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Survey Results and Key Findings identified, we all have a part to play to move forward in this work. “DEI 101: Understanding Bias,” created and facilitated by the Avarna Group, provides training about basic ideas of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The trainings will be offered October, November, and December at several locations, including Fort Mason, the Presidio, Alcatraz Island, and Marin. The first training is Oct.1, and the last is Dec. 12. You can check the schedule at https://training.parksconservancy.org/calendar. All staff and interns must complete the training by the end of the year. Please check in with your supervisor to confirm how to sign up.

Parks Conservancy staff, NPS staff, and park interns: Join us at a site loved by both visitors and locals alike - Ocean Beach! This will be the first ever Park Day at Ocean Beach and many hands are needed to prep the area for winter. Spend the morning working alongside colleagues and friends to protect the O’Shaughnessy Seawall, a cultural resource in the park, by giving it a fresh coat of paint (weather permitting). Other activities may include litter pickup, planting, vegetation clearing, and sand removal from pathways and drains.
Mark your calendars, check with your supervisor, and RSVP HERE by October 25th. (Keep an eye out for the carpooling link on the form.)
Check out these “then and now” photos of Ocean Beach to get a sense of the unique history of this coastal area and get pumped for Park Day! Then & Now Link:

Did you know most of us in the Bay Area live less than 10 miles from a major fault that can produce a damaging earthquake? There is no known way to scientifically predict earthquakes at this time, but here is one step you should take right now. Receive incident information by texting your zip code to 888-777 and receive further guidance by opting in to the following local public alert systems:
Mark your Calendars and stay tuned for The Great ShakeOut on 10/17! The Parks Conservancy is participating in California’s largest Earthquake drill on Thursday, October 17th.

Thank you to all who attended our many CalSAC trainings this past summer. We’re in the final stretch now! While these are our final CalSAC trainings for now, Victor, our Professional Development Program Manager, will be working with the new PD Lead Team to continue planning more learning opportunities for the park in the future. Check out our three remaining CalSAC trainings in the updated list below:
**We highly recommend signing up for these opportunities as soon as possible. If a training has less than five people signed up within two weeks of the training happening, we may need to reschedule the training to ensure we are serving the optimal amount of people. This also helps us better prepare the necessary materials, hospitality, and accommodations for the training. If you have any questions please contact Victor at vsmall@parksconservancy.org
-10/8 9am - 11am Promoting an Understanding of Cultural Sensitivity (SF)
-10/8 11:15am 1:15am Incorporating Older Youth Voices in Program Activities (SF)
-10/25 10am- 12pm Cultural Conflicts and Strategies (SF)
