Upcoming Art in the Parks Talk by Sculptor Guiseppi Penone
Gagosian, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and the Parks Conservancy present a yearlong outdoor installation by Giuseppe Penone in San Francisco’s historic Fort Mason. Two sculptures by Penone – La logica del vegetale (The Logic of the Vegetal) (2012) and Idee di pietra (Idea of Stone) (2004) – will be on display on October 24.
In celebration of this latest Art in the Parks installation, the artist will give a talk at the Chapel at upper Fort Mason on Thursday, October 24, at 5pm. Penone will discuss his large-scale outdoor sculptures with Elizabeth Mangini, art historian and author of a forthcoming monograph on the artist. This event is free and open to the public with an RSVP. To attend the free event, presented by Gagosian Quarterly Talks, RSVP to rsvpsf@gagosian.com

As the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Survey Results and Key Findings identified, we all have a part to play to move forward in this work. “DEI 101: Understanding Bias,” created and facilitated by the Avarna Group, provides training about basic ideas of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The trainings will be offered October, November, and December at several locations, including Fort Mason, the Presidio, Alcatraz Island, and Marin. The first training is Oct.1, and the last is Dec. 12. You can check the schedule at https://training.parksconservancy.org/calendar. All staff and interns must complete the training by the end of the year. Please check in with your supervisor to confirm how to sign up.
Have questions? Check out our DEI 101 FAQs or contact dei@parksconservancy.org

Parks Conservancy staff, NPS staff, and park interns: Join us at a site loved by both visitors and locals alike - Ocean Beach! This will be the first ever Park Day at Ocean Beach and many hands are needed to prep the area for winter. Spend the morning working alongside colleagues and friends to protect the O’Shaughnessy Seawall, a cultural resource in the park, by giving it a fresh coat of paint (weather permitting). Other activities may include litter pickup, planting, vegetation clearing, and sand removal from pathways and drains.
Mark your calendars, check with your supervisor, and RSVP HERE by October 25th. (Keep an eye out for the carpooling link on the form.)
Check out these “then and now” photos of Ocean Beach to get a sense of the unique history of this coastal area and get pumped for Park Day!

Organize your Grab and Go Emergency Kit
As part of our participation in California’s largest Earthquake drill, The Great ShakeOut, we are organizing our emergency supplies. It is also a good idea to organize a kit at home.
Did you know Parks Conservancy sites and vehicles have grab and go emergency kits?
Please reach out to your supervisor and familiarize yourself with its location and contents. In fact, the Great ShakeOut drill is a good opportunity to pull out your kits and assess as a team using the emergency kit checklist to inventory emergency bags at your work sites and in vehicles. The Safety Committee will do a bulk order of emergency kit supplies on November 15, so be sure to fill out the Emergency Kit Replenishment Form as a team before then!
If you have any essential medications, it is also recommended that you prepare a personal kit with these items that can be kept at your workspace or on your person in the event of an emergency. Read more at 72hours.org for tips.

Highlights from The Great Shake Out
Shout out to everyone that shook out! This year we had widespread and creative participation in the Great Shake Out. Here are some highlights:
- The Crissy Field Center took the time to work through scenarios such as an Earthquake occurs when summer camp is out at Ocean Beach, IYEL is on the way to Yosemite or there is a big camp out on Rob Hill.
- Our Visitor Center managers gathered under a conference table during a meeting; the Redwood Creek Team worked earthquake safety into a bigger safety training day; The Funston Nursery participated in the morning drill at the office; and Stewardship teams conducted tailgate talks out in the field.
- The Parks Conservancy and NPS at Fort Mason both played audio of an Earthquake for 60 seconds to make the drill more realistic.
- We are also conducting a 2 hour Earthquake table-top exercise amongst our Incident Management Team here at the Conservancy.
- Special shout-out to Raf Salgado, the first to turn in an emergency kit replenishment form. Get yours in before the Nov 15th deadline. (You can find forms on the Safety Page)

Thank you to all who attended our many CalSAC trainings this past summer. We’re in the final stretch now! While this is our final CalSAC training for now, Victor, our Professional Development Program Manager, will be working with the new PD Lead Team to continue planning more learning opportunities for the park in the future. Check out our remaining CalSAC trainings in the updated list below:
**We highly recommend signing up for these opportunities as soon as possible. If a training has less than five people signed up within two weeks of the training happening, we may need to reschedule the training to ensure we are serving the optimal amount of people. This also helps us better prepare the necessary materials, hospitality, and accommodations for the training.
If you have any questions please contact Victor at vsmall@parksconservancy.org
-10/25 10am- 12pm Cultural Conflicts and Strategies (SF)
